The Dark tower series comprised of more than 4,000 pages, incorporated unique and exclusive names of location to make this series special and worth remembering. The lead character, Roland Deschain, is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name as explained by Stephen King. The Dark tower series was principally based on Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came, a poem by Robert Browning but two movies, Lords of the Rings Arthurian Legend, and The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, also inspired Stephen king. Stephen King claimed that whole dark tower series is his first draft and his plan to redraft the whole series was changed after the release of revised Gunslinger (1st volume of series). Seven volumes of this fascinating series are published in addition to one prequel (2012) with first volume released in 1982. The Dark Tower series written Stephen king is blend of multiple genres including science fiction, horror, dark and western fantasies.
However, I also watched the trailer for that movie, so while reading I was able to picture Brynner as Taras and Tony Curtis as his son Andrii. I vaguely remembered seeing the film that starred Yul Brynner as Taras Bulba, but I learned at Wiki that the movie was very different from the story. So I went to Project Gutenberg and chose this book. I have read one title by this author and remembered that I had intended to read more some day. I came across the name Gogol a few weeks ago while reading a book about Ukraine. I will come back someday and finish the book properly, so this review is only for Taras Bulba, not for the entire book. But I am not in the mood for the rest of them. I have finished Tara Bulba, the first of six stories in this collection by Nikolai Gogol. On a whole, I think Meg Gardiner did a great job taking that route. It starts out with a big event and then follows the aftermath. Those types of characters really make thrillers! What I Thought of the Story: Ransom River was an interesting twist on the normal Thriller story. You are never quite sure what it is that he is holding back. Seth is also complicated and a little "fishy". You wanted to root for her, pick her up, and you wanted to give her a hug. She is thrown into a horrid situation and works her way through each and every step. Rory is complex, strong, and emotionally unsure. The characters reflect this different style. This is a departure from her series and much darker. Read for Audio ReviewOverall Rating: 3.75Character Rating: 4.00Story Rating: 3.50Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)First Thought when Finished: Ransom River is much darker (even though she writes dark thrillers) than Meg Gardiner's normal writing but I liked it! She has a real talent for it!What I Thought of the Characters: Meg Gardiner really knows how to write compelling characters and in Ransom River she does it again. Style: Chopin writes smoothly and easily, with succulent descriptive passages. The sentiments exhibited are conventional romances, although with wit and some insight. The novel "The Awakening" might better be termed "The Abandonment." I suggest that it was considered unacceptable as much for for its denigration of the roles of wife and mother, as for the restrained sensuality and "coded" adultery, although I'm sure Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn would have disapproved of the book. Substance: The short stories are entertaining, in the 19th century style, with interesting views of the Louisiana Creole milieu. Does it get better as the novels progress? Or does it get worse? Find out below: In terms of the creepy factor though, I should warn that this is the most likely to scare children as the crayon, while presented quite friendly at first, comes off far more intimidating than the antagonists of the other books. Read this book using Google Play Books app on your PC, android, iOS devices. Again the art is wonderful, full of black, white and grays emulating old Universal monster movies (with frames that feel very much like they are from horror movies), with a dash of whatever the theme color is (in this case purple for the crayon). It seems pleasant enough at first, helping him ace his test, answer all questions right without studying, and allowing for more video game time. In fact, it’s more than CREEPY, it may be evil. I was entirely too young to be diving into Jurassic Park in the early 1990s-what I had was the next best thing, a book called Lost in Dinosaur World by children’s author Geoffrey T. Was the book in question Michael Crichton’s classic 1990 novel Jurassic Park? Nope. There was a sage dinosaur expert, and a young protagonist named Tim. There were electric fences, and automated vehicles that shuttled guests around the park. There were scenes of dinosaurs hatching in a nursery, where they were tended like domesticated livestock by uniformed park scientists. There was one book in particular, though, that captured my attention as a young boy-a fictional account of a futuristic dinosaur amusement park, fraught with danger and thrills. Dinosaur books littered our home, and I absorbed an absurd amount of information that I somehow still partially retain now. My love of learning about the extinct reptiles was no doubt an early indication for my parents of the geeky bookworm that I would become, and they responded by showering me with all the nonfiction and fiction about dinosaurs I could handle, graciously putting up with an imperious 6-year-old who demanded correct pronunciation of species names, as if the dinosaurs would be offended otherwise. As a child growing up in the 1990s, I went through a long period of infatuation-obsession, really-with dinosaurs. |
